California Police Chiefs' Association

Robert L. Davis

Chief of Police
San Jose Police Department

On behalf of the San Jose Police Department, I would like to welcome you to the 2010  California Police Chiefs' Association Symposium in San Jose, California.  The California Police Chiefs' Association is a professional organization that has a long and distinguished history of representing public safety interests of all Californians.  It is with great honor that the San Jose Police Department is hosting this event.

The theme of the 2010 symposium is "Technology – Policing for the Future."  The theme is apropos for San Jose, otherwise known as the "Capital of Silicon Valley."  Consistent with this theme, the symposium will offer a technology panel and town hall meeting to discuss the latest in law enforcement technology and the many challenges facing law enforcement. The symposium will showcase cutting-edge products from over 130 exhibitors.

You will hear from dynamic speakers on contemporary policing issues, highlighted by the Oakland Police Department's presentation of the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved tragedy that claimed the lives of four of Oakland's finest.  On behalf of the California Police Chiefs' Association, I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Oakland Police Department for their courage in stepping forward to share this tragic account to our membership.

The off-site events we have planned feature the best that San Jose and the Bay Area have to offer.  I am confident you and your guests will enjoy the activities throughout the symposium.  The installation of the incoming association president will be historic, as San Mateo Police Chief Susan Manheimer will become the first female police chief to be installed  as the association's president.  I also want to congratulate the outgoing president, Pasadena Police Chief Bernard Melekian, on his appointment as the Director of the United States Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services program.  Chief Melekian's dedication to the advancement of the police profession has elevated him to a level where he will have the opportunity to broaden the impact of professional law enforcement at a national level.

As you can see, I am very excited about this year's symposium.  Members of my staff have worked diligently to create a hospitable and memorable experience for your stay in San Jose.  I look forward to meeting you at the event.

Warm Regards,

Robert L. Davis
Chief of Police
